This article aims to comprehensively analyze the recurring dilemmas that arise due to the self-determination of the citizen in the role of a patient, as well as the legal and sacred duty of the medical professional to work in the preservation of human life. Subsequently, it intends to examine the fundamental rights of the individual, from the perspective of the principle of human dignity, the protection of health and safety, and the freedom of religious expression. In the end, it will seek to demonstrate that respect for patient autonomy should prevail, considering that freedom is a fundamental right that has universal and determining significance in human actions.
