Abstract

According to the Ministry of Health "having the clean hands is a right and a duty" to promote social health practices and teach hygiene habits through educational actions, school is the ideal space. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge of children in grades 3 to 5 of elementary school, regarding the importance of hand hygiene in the school. The study is of the descriptive type and quantitative nature, the research was made, in the period from October 16 to 18 2017 the afternoon shift of each class. The population were the students enrolled regularly in the school, the sample was attended by 172 students, one questionnaire of closed type and eleven questions was applied. In the study, it was observed that the great part of the students knows the practice of hand washing and it is extremely important to do it. Most students wash their hands after using the restroom. When they arrive at school they wash with soap and water and using alcohol in gel after this practice and They was aware that not doing hand hygiene can lead to acquiring diseases contagious diseases. It was found that school and family are pillars for this knowledge. Currently most of the contaminations in children have been caused by lack of hand hygiene, increasing the number of diarrheal and respiratory diseases. The promotion of health in education, is essential for awareness and prevention of diseases.
