Abstract

Background: Aging is a continuous process in which several physiological changes occur, which can lead to cognitive impairment in these individuals, with Alzheimer's disease being the most common dementia among the elderly. A neurodegenerative, progressive and irreversible pathology is characterized. Nutrition seems to be related to a protective role in the disease, and the use of B vitamins and antioxidants has shown interesting perspectives. Aim: To compare the use of B vitamins or antioxidants as a protective agent in the nutritional support of patients with Alzheimer's disease. Method: A review of the literature was carried out using the Publish or Perish computational tool, selecting only the most relevant studies. Evidence Synthesis: Based on the selected articles, we can see that diet is a factor of great importance in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease, acting in the control of risk factors such as hyperhomocysteinemia, hypercholesterolemia and due to the protective action of antioxidants, but the studies regarding the improvement and progression of the disease.
