Abstract

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and is manifested by cognitive and memory impairment, characterized by intracellular neurofibrillary tangles and extracellular amyloid protein deposits that contribute to the formation of senile plaques, neural and synaptic loss in these patients. In the ketogenic diet, ketone bodies are metabolic substrates produced by the liver under conditions of fasting, caloric restriction and ingestion of diets high in fat and low in carbohydrates. Vitamin B12 not only facilitates folic acid metabolism, but also synthesizes DNA for cells. Aim: To conduct a literature review to compare the effects of the ketogenic diet and vitamin B12 on the improvement of Alzheimer's disease symptoms. Method: We used the Publish or Perish computational tool with the following strategy: (((alzheimer OR “alzheimer's disease” OR “alzheimer's disease”) AND (“ketogenic diet” OR “ketogenic diet” OR “vitamin B12” OR “vitamin B12”)). Conclusion: Both diets induced improvement in patients' cognition and memory in a similar way, and it is up to the nutritionist to discuss with the patient the diet that best fits their possibilities.
