Methodology: Literature review through research of articles and scientific journals in PUBMED, Academic Google and SCIELO databases, using the following descriptors: generalize danxiety, anxiety disorder, physiological changes, anxiety pathophysiology, pharmacotherapy. Conclusion: Barbiturates are the oldest class of anxiolytic drugs with regard to GAD, however, currently, it is no longer used for this purpose due to the emergence of safer and more effective drugs such as, for example, benzodiazepines and drug inhibitors. serotonin reuptake, which are the most indicated drugs for the treatment of GAD.
