Abstract

Introduction: Premenstrual Tension (PT) occurs in the period prior to a menstruation, and this period can cause changes in eating behavior. Aim: To relate the nutritional aspects and dietary preferences with the premenstrual tension in a nutritional clinic located at São Bernardo do Campo city – SP, Brazil. Method: A descriptive, prospective, quantitative approach study was conducted with data collection addressing symptoms and eating behavior during the premenstrual period in a nutritional clinic. Results: The sample consisted of 50 women and it was observed that the vast majority claimed to have changes in eating behavior during PT. As for the consumption of sweets, also most of women said they had more desire for these foods, specially chocolate. Much of the sample reported mood changes during PT and large part of the sample reported weight gain. Conclusion: There are changes in eating behavior during PT and the nutritionist should know how to manage nutritional behavior in order to reduce the consequences and negative symptoms of this period. Further studies are needed to determine specific nutritional behaviors.
